Additionally, research institute Counterpoint's statistics show that during the 618 promotion period in 2024, the sales volume of smartphones in China increased by 6.8% year-on-year. Most manufacturers offered discounts similar to last year, and driven by new 5G products, Huawei became the biggest winner, with sales increasing by 42.4% year-on-year. The institute stated that the 618 period this year lasted from May 20th to June 20th, which was longer than in previous years, and this also contributed to the increase in sales volume this year.
During this 618 period, Huawei offered the smallest smartphone discounts but still received a warm welcome; vivo's growth rate was second, with sales volume increasing by 13.6% year-on-year. Relying on high-end models such as the vivo X100s series, affordable Y200 series, and iQOO Neo 9s Pro, vivo S19 series, etc., the sales volume increased during this period.
Xiaomi's sales volume increased by nearly 12.6% year-on-year, mainly due to its discounts of up to 1000 yuan and an increase in the sales volume of mid-to-high-end smartphones. Xiaomi's Redmi K70 model was the best-selling domestic smartphone product during this period.
Honor's sales volume increased by 4.3% year-on-year, not only offering significant price reductions but also launching popular high-cost-performance products such as the mid-range Honor 200 series and Honor X50.
Apple's sales volume increased by 2.7% year-on-year, thanks to more robust promotional activities than in previous years, as well as an additional week of promotion compared to 2023. Apple provided the largest discount in its history this year, up to 2350 yuan, to attract consumers.
According to JD.com data, Apple won the championship in smartphone sales volume during the 618 period, with the iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max models taking the top two spots on the sales list.
Counterpoint stated that given the recovery of the Chinese smartphone market since the beginning of this year, it is expected that there will be a low single-digit percentage increase in year-on-year growth in 2024.
After nearly two years of downturn in the global smartphone market, it is expected to usher in a new wave of recovery in the second half of this year, with the help of AI applications.Among them, Apple's iPhone 16 series and Google's Pixel 9 are the most eye-catching to the outside world, driving the performance of the mobile phone supply chain, including Largan, Foxconn, TSMC, and Win Semiconductor, to benefit.
According to the latest report from the research institution IDC, this year's global smartphone shipments are estimated to increase by 4% year-on-year, reaching 1.21 billion units, and it will grow by another 2.3% next year. The annual growth rate from 2026 to 2028 will be in the single digits, and the overall compound annual growth rate from 2024 to 2028 will be 2.3%. The mobile phone market is indeed on the road to recovery.
Research institutions point out that there are two major factors driving the global smartphone market back to a growth trajectory: one is that various brand manufacturers are actively introducing AI applications to attract consumers to pay, and the second is that the penetration and popularity of 5G continue to rise, with many users gradually switching from 4G to 5G phones.
Industry insiders point out that 5G is an irreversible trend, as is AI. From this year on, all flagship models must have AI generative functions or applications, otherwise, it may be difficult to attract consumers' willingness to purchase. In the future, mobile phone brand manufacturers will compete not only in hardware specifications but also in the need to have more and richer AI applications.
